The List

Over the years, and this started back in my Aim days in Perth, I’ve built a list of things to look out for in business. This list was further enhanced during my interim management career at GHRL, where we saw some real basket-cases!

Our rule of thumb became that it’s okay to have one thing on the list. Two is borderline. Anyone with three of these traits should be avoided at all costs!

So, here’s the list: –

  • Pipe Smoker
  • Waistcoat
  • Personal Number Plate
  • Certificates on the Wall
  • Letters after their name on business cards/stationery
  • Facial Hair (moustache or beard – stuble is okay if you’re young like James Deer!)
  • Obese
  • Jewellery (on a man)
  • Untidy desk/office
  • Don’t reply to Emails (even to acknowledge receipt)
  • Don’t return phone calls

So how many do you have?

  1. Enjoyed this blog item.
I only plead guilty to one on your list – the untidy desk. I loathe the last two – indeed, I blogged about this earlier this year, posted it on LinkedIn and got about 150 replies from all over the world.
Good manners in business is a personal campaign.

    All the best.

    1. Hi Mike, and thanks for your comment / follow! Yeah, there is no excuse for bad manners in business, but plenty of examples! In this day of Gen C, it’s vitally important to do the simple stuff & do it well. What does it take to return a call or email?

  2. 1 – the letters after my name. I worked bloody hard to get them so I’m going to use them! Ok so sometimes I forget to return calls, it’s my age.
