I’ve just posted a link to the One Day in Dundee video, part of the City of Culture 2017 bid. Watching that video gave me goosebumps & it was great to see so many people that I know featured. Having lived in Dundee in the late 80s and then watched the City’s transformation, what’s been achieved is nothing short of remarkable. The City has a swagger, a confidence, an exciting future.
Then I think about Perth. None of those descriptions fit my home town. In the conversations I’ve had recently many of the locals seem defeated. Either that or rooted in the past, with ingrained prejudices about Dundee believing that Perth is a better place. Wise up! Perth looks & feels like a dying City. Sure, there are sparks of life here and there, but they’re isolated and being put out by the negativity of the city. It’s like the dementors from Harry Potter have descended and sucked the life out of the place.
My good friend Sandy Fyfe has been at the heart of the music scene in Perth for many years. Earlier this week Sandy announced that he was putting on his last gig at the end of this month. He’s had enough, and that’s desperately sad but understandable. I’ve had a lot of similar conversations.
If we’re to change Perth, then we have to change the mindsets of the people. That’s not an easy or quick thing to do. Many people, including the City leadership, don’t (publicly) accept that there’s a problem, but accepting that is the first step to changing the City’s future direction. So let’s all agree that Perth isn’t the place it used to be, that it’s fallen on hard times. We don’t have to figure out the solutions yet, but if we can change the way we see the City, look at it honestly and objectively, then we can start the process of working out how to make it better.
