Earn the right to ask for our business

Every day we get interrupted. People we don’t know email or call us asking us to buy something from them. They even do it on LinkedIn messaging now! It pisses me off.

Don’t get me wrong, I don’t have a problem with people selling, but these guys haven’t done their homework. They know nothing about me, they’re just doing the digital equivalent of working through the phonebook.

Cold calling isn’t a great strategy anymore. People don’t like it. Stop doing it. I’m not saying don’t sell, just think about it more strategically.

Think about what you can do to help us. What can you do to add value, without any expectation of anything in return. Earn our trust. Earn the right to ask for our business. Play the long game.
GaryVee isn’t everyone’s cup of tea, but he nails it. Jab, jab, jab, right hook. Or put it another way give value, give value, give value, then ask if you can help.

These days, you need earn the right to ask. Deliver value first.

How are you going to do that?

  1. I couldn’t agree with you more, Ali. Everyday I receive around 5 emails from people that want to improve my SEO. I don’t know these people and haven’t signed up to their email lists. People do business with people and if I want to work on my website’s SEO I know exactly who to contact. Play the long game!
